Author's Note

A few weeks after I submitted my final manuscript to my publisher, I went to see the movie 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.' It's about the life of Mr. Rogers, as portrayed by Tom Hanks. I knew little about Fred Rogers, other than he was the host of a children's show and he wore a sweater. Watching the movie, I learned that he was a great teacher, philosopher and humanitarian.

In general, I've found that people are uncomfortable talking about dying and death. Mr. Rogers said, "If it's mentionable, it's manageable." Grieving the loss of a pet can be very difficult, and one of the hardest things to do is talk about it. It is my hope that this book will give those grieving the loss of a pet the emotional vocabulary and self permission to move gently and completely through the process.

After I got home from the movie, I googled Mr. Rogers to learn more about him. I came across a quote of his that resonated with me. "The greatest gift you ever give is your honest self." Throughout my life, I have been a private person. A few months after Toby died, my best friend told me that in all the years she'd known me (49 years) I'd never talked so much. I asked her if this was annoying. She said, "No, I like it."

Writing this book was another way of expressing myself through words. I realized that what I wrote in this book came from the heart. In writing it, I expressed my true thoughts and feelings. In doing so, I am giving my honest self, or at least a part of myself.
